Does Diet Affect Your Dog's Dental Health?
I get some version of this question almost every week in the exam room. "I switched him to wet food, is that going to wreck his teeth?" Or the opposite: "If I just feed dry kibble, does that count as brushing?"
The honest answer is more modest than either the kibble camp or the wet-food camp wants it to be. Diet plays a role in your dog's oral environment. It is not a small, made-up role, and it is also not the lever that decides whether your dog gets periodontal disease. Let me walk you through what the research actually shows, because it's more interesting — and more limited — than the marketing on either side of this argument suggests.

Dry vs. Wet: What One Real Study Actually Found
Let's start with the comparison everyone asks about first: dry kibble versus wet food.
There's a 2022 study out of the University of Illinois that's one of the few controlled looks at this specific question (Oba et al., Journal of Animal Science). Twelve adult dogs, crossover design — meaning each dog ate both diets at different points, which is a solid way to control for the fact that every dog's mouth is different. Six weeks on each food.
Here's what they found, and I want to be precise about it because this is exactly where diet claims tend to get oversold.
- Salivary pH and breath sulfur compounds — the dogs eating dry food had higher salivary pH and lower breath sulfur compounds than when they were eating wet food. Breath sulfur compounds are one of the chemical signatures behind bad breath, so this points toward dry food being associated with a somewhat less odor-friendly mouth environment.
- Plaque coverage — plaque tended to run higher on the wet-food diet, though this was a trend, not a dramatic split.
- Calculus and gingivitis scores — here's the part that matters most, and it's the part that gets left out of pet food marketing. Hardened tartar buildup and actual gum inflammation did not differ significantly between the two diets.
Look, I want you to sit with that last finding, because it's the honest answer to the question you're actually asking. Twelve dogs is a small sample. This is one study. But even within that limited data, the diet that "won" on breath chemistry did not win on the outcomes that actually predict disease — tartar and gum inflammation. That tells you dry food is not doing the job people assume it's doing just by being crunchy.
What I take from this study, and what I think is fair to take from it: dry kibble may have a modest edge on breath-related chemistry, wet food may run a bit higher on visible plaque, and neither one is a dental solution on its own. If a bag of kibble ever implied otherwise to you, that implication was doing more work than the research supports.

"Dental Kibble" Is a Different Category Than "Kibble"
This is where I see the most confusion, so let me separate two things people lump together: regular dry kibble, and kibble that's been specifically engineered as a dental product.
A 2002 study in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry (Logan, Finney, and Hefferren) looked at a food built with a particular kibble texture and size, designed so the tooth has to work through the piece before it breaks — more chew contact against the tooth surface and gumline before the kibble gives way. Compared against a control diet, that purpose-built texture changed plaque and gingival scores.
That is not the same finding as "dry food is good for teeth." It's a much narrower finding: a kibble engineered for mechanical cleaning action can outperform a diet that wasn't built for that job. Ordinary dry kibble, the bag you grab off the shelf that was formulated for nutrition and shelf life, was never engineered to do this. Most kibble shatters on first bite with minimal contact against the tooth surface. The mechanical benefit these purpose-built diets rely on doesn't show up by accident.
So when you see "dental" or "oral care" on a bag of dry food, that's a real, specific engineering claim — not a blanket statement that applies to dry food as a category. Regular kibble and dental kibble are cousins, not twins.
Home-Prepared Diets and the Hygiene Question
The other diet question I hear constantly is about home-prepared and raw diets. Owners want to know if cooking for their dog helps or hurts.
There's a useful field study here too — Buckley and colleagues, published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2011, looked at home-prepared diets alongside home oral hygiene practices in cats and dogs. What makes this paper worth mentioning is that it's one of the few pieces of research that tries to account for diet and hygiene together, rather than treating diet as if it operates in isolation.
That's the more honest way to think about this whole topic. A dog on any diet — kibble, wet, home-prepared — still accumulates plaque daily, because plaque formation is a bacterial process driven by saliva and the tooth surface, not primarily by what's in the bowl. What a dog eats can shift the texture and composition of that oral environment at the margins. What actually happens to that plaque day to day — whether it gets disrupted or left to mineralize into tartar — depends much more on daily oral care habits than on the diet itself.
I'm not going to tell you a home-prepared diet is dentally superior or inferior to commercial food, because the research doesn't support a confident claim in either direction at that level. What I will tell you is that if you're feeding a home-prepared diet, particularly for a dog with an existing health condition, that's a conversation to have with your own veterinarian — for nutritional balance generally, and specifically so they can flag anything about the recipe that's relevant to your dog's individual health.
How Strong Is This Evidence, Really?
I want to zoom out for a second, because I think owners deserve an honest answer about how confident anyone should be in diet-and-teeth claims generally, not just the studies I've already mentioned.
A 2005 systematic review in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry (Roudebush, Logan, and Hale) took a hard look at the evidence behind home-care categories for preventing periodontal disease in dogs and cats — brushing, chews, diets, water additives, and more — and graded the strength of evidence behind each one. Diet showed up as one category among several, with evidence quality that varied by product and claim, not a single verdict that diet either matters enormously or doesn't matter at all.
Here's why I bring that up. In twenty years of practice, I've watched pet food marketing treat "dental" claims with far more confidence than the underlying science holds. The honest picture, once you actually read the primary literature instead of the bag, looks like this: diet is one input among several, some diet formats have small, real, directionally consistent effects on parts of the oral environment, and none of what's been studied replaces daily mechanical or topical disruption of plaque as the dominant lever you control.
Where This Leaves You as an Owner
So, practically, what do you do with all this?
- Don't switch diets expecting a dental transformation. The research doesn't support that, for kibble, wet food, or home-prepared meals.
- If dental performance matters to you specifically, look for a diet actually engineered and tested for it — the mechanical texture research (Logan et al., 2002) is about purpose-built products, not diet type in general.
- Talk to your vet before changing your dog's diet, especially if your dog has an existing health condition. That's true for nutritional reasons well beyond dental health, and it's the right person to weigh in on what's appropriate for your individual dog.
- Keep your daily oral care habits doing the heavy lifting. Plaque reforms daily regardless of what's in the bowl. Diet can nudge the margins; it doesn't replace daily disruption.
