Why Small Breed Dogs Get Dental Disease Younger (And What the Research Shows)


A 4-pound Yorkie and an 80-pound Labrador can be the exact same age and have completely different mouths. The Lab might have a little tartar on the back molars. Small dogs get periodontal disease earlier and worse than large dogs, on average, and the reasons are mostly anatomical, not behavioral. Owners of small breeds aren't doing anything wrong. Their dogs are working with a harder set of physical circumstances from day one.

The size-severity link isn't a hunch — it's one of the largest datasets in veterinary dentistry

The foundational paper here is Harvey, Shofer, and Laster (1994), which analyzed periodontal findings across more than 67,000 dogs and established something that's held up ever since: periodontal disease severity increases with age, and it moves in the opposite direction of body weight. That finding has been replicated and extended since. A VetCompass primary-care surveillance study of more than 148,000 UK dogs found periodontal disease among the most frequently recorded disorders in general practice. A separate longitudinal study followed 52 Miniature Schnauzers over time and documented earlier onset and faster progression than what's typically seen in larger breeds. And a private-practice survey of more than 31,000 dogs and cats in the US found dental calculus and periodontal disease to be the single most common diagnosis in the sampled population.

None of this is about small dogs being neglected more than large dogs. It's about physical geometry.

The same 42 teeth, a fraction of the jaw

Dogs have 42 adult teeth regardless of whether they're 4 pounds or 90. In a large breed, there's ample room between them. In a toy or small breed, those same 42 teeth are packed into a jaw a fraction of the size, which means more tooth-to-tooth contact, more places for plaque to hide, and less exposed surface area for saliva to naturally clean.

Retained baby teeth are far more common

Toy and small breeds have a much higher rate of retained deciduous teeth, where a puppy tooth never falls out and the adult tooth erupts alongside it instead of replacing it. Less bone behind each tooth

In a small dog, the roots of the teeth take up proportionally more of the jawbone than they do in a large dog. In advanced, untreated cases, veterinary dentists have linked severe bone loss in small dogs to a real risk of jaw fracture — a consequence almost never seen in large breeds.

It's harder to see, so it's easier to miss

A small dog's mouth is small.
